Spinning returns, briefly

I've been hors de combat for a couple of days, after getting part one of the newish shingles shot. After seeking it for two years, finally the pharmacy had it in stock, and I seized the day.

Just as well I didn't have any commitments this weekend. When they say site pain and tiredness are common side effects, I am here to say, yes, yes.

My deltoid whined and complained, and I slept many hours. I suppose it means my system is working on it.

Up to now, none of the serious side effects I had  from the last flu shot, involving calls to the FDA etc. I survived and don't get flu shots any more.

I do encourage everyone else who can, to get them, though, for herd immunity. But the doctor and pharmacist both said the flu vaccine isn't similar to this one.  And a friend who has had both shingles and the shots says the shot is preferable. So there's that.

All this means I've been trying to occupy myself when awake, with something that didn't involve raising my arm or lifting stuff. Surprising how many things do require either or both.

I got desperate this morning and did a bit of spinning, very calming, felt really good. The yarn might become Izzy dolls eventually.

However spindle spinning if you sit, inevitably makes your shoulder go up as the yarn lengthens before you wind it on to the shaft. And I didn't feel too much like standing.

But I really enjoyed getting back into it. And here's the little bit I accomplished.  Much more cheerful now.

  1. I got my shingles shot several years ago, and while it was an Experience (they told me they kept it on dry ice and wow did they ever) but no after effects. My husband finally got his second shingles shot this week from the new batch, and now we are probably pretty much protected.

I only worry about it because if it breaks out on your face, near the eyes, it can cause all sorts of eye problems. Not good.

And I am sorry that you had such a rough time with it. Glad to hear that you've given up on the flu shots, as one doctor told me, get a pneumonia shot and you're good to go, since that's what usually takes people out, not the flu itself.

    at least you're feeling better.

I'm still rounding up the weaving paraphenalia, damn all but there's a lot of it, It seems every drawer I open has yarn or thread or shuttles or Mystery Tools...

  2. I had the old vaccine years ago, not much aftereffect, but my doctor insisted I should pursue the new one, much more effective etc. If the impact is anything to go by, it should be. It was badly rolled out -- doctors all alerted, lot of pr, then the mfrs discovered the demand was far beyond their plans, and couldn't deliver. Some pharma taking waiting lists. After a bunch of calls I just lucked into a supply that just arrived. Two years trying to get it. You'd think they'd have a vague idea of how many older people would want it, they being the prime target. But someone didn't take stats in college..

  3. I really look forward to pix of your loom setup once it's up. Posting separately, more interesting than Vaccine News You Can Use.

  4. Deltoids! I think that's what's hurting in my shoulders. I got the flu and shingle vaccines at the same time in early winter, and I remember it hurting worse than normal after - I think it was the arm that got the shingles vaccine that hurt the worst. And I got sick two days later too. With a bad cold. I'm pretty sure it was the pharmacist who gave me the vaccines who also gave me the cold...

  5. I hope you soon feel better. We take shoulders for granted until they hurt, then realize how much work they quietly do. But don't rush back to lifting books. They're heavy.

  6. I'm sorry to read that you have been under the weather. I have not gotten a jab because when I was about to I got sick for five weeks. That yarn color is right up my street! Take care.

  7. Isn't that color range lovely? My jam.

Thank you for the sympathy. Today I'm fine. More testing tomorrow, all just routine, dull.

  8. Ouch. I wasn't aware that there was a new and supposedly improved shingles vaccine. I suppose that means our dr. will be lying in wait to jab us with that one too. Always get a flu shot and - touch wood - no side effects. Another thing our dr would be get all bent out of shape if we didn't do.

  9. The new one is called Shringrix, and it's a series of two, two months apart. If you get it, wise to clear your calendar for the next day or two! Everyone doesn't have the reaction I had, but I was glad I didn't absolutely have to go anywhere for a bit.

  10. Not being one who cares for shots, but also having had shingles, I'd say a shot would be exceedingly preferable! Glad to hear no adverse side affects. Nice that spinning was a comfort!

  11. My doctor says likewise. She's been encouraging me strongly to keep pursuing the fugitive vaccine, since she assures me I definitely don't want shingles. She'll be pleased, and get off my case now that I've got the first one.

  14. I don't get the flu shot. either my antisocial tendencies protect me or I have a great immune system. I thinks it's some of both but I haven't had the flu probably in 40 years. I should probably get the shingles vaccine since I know several people who have had shingles in my age group.

  15. I never used to until I had an awful bout, and did for years after until a scary reaction a few years ago involving calls from CVS hq, reports to the CDC, FDA, and who knows who else, prompted my doctor to say don't do that anymore. You'd be wise to get pneumonia and shingles shots, though just in case.
